-  who we are ...

Sotiriou Diving School is among the very first in Greece. It was established by Vangelis Sotiriou in 1965 and is nowadays run with the help of the rest of the Sotiriou Family.

Vangelis first went into diving in 1968 and started teaching it in 1978. He was a member of the cave diving team that first explored the underwater cave system of lake Vouliagmeni in 1978 (one of the biggest in the world).  In the summer he runs the Volcano Diving Center on the island of Santorini.

Toula Sotiriou - General Manager:

Toula has tirelessly supported her husband Vangelis for years on end by running almost everything not directly related to instruction, most notably the shop.  If you happen to call in, she will most likely be the gentle lady to help you out with whatever you need!

-  where we are located ...

- Athens -
- Santorini Island -

Athens, the capital of Greece and the host of the 2004 Olympics, a city with more than 3000 years of history, offers numerous attractions.  Most people pass through Athens on their way to other locations across Greece.  The one or two days they usually spend there may understandably be hectic as the various local attractions compete for time in their already busy schedules.

Nevertheless, diving can often be the perfect excuse to get away:  After all, holidays are supposed to be stress-free!  And, in fact, this is what diving does for you:  It relaxes you!  When you are underwater, you are in a different world.  There, everything is slower, quieter and calmer.  The colours are different, more vivid and, at the same time, appeasing.  Visitors to Athens have repeatedly commended the clarity of the waters there.  Some have left Athens saying that they did their best dives there, which for us are only average if you consider the unlimited possibilities that the natural beauty of Greece offers.

The Diving School itself is located 10 mins away from downtown Athens in the Ilissia area, near the well-known Hilton and Caravel hotels.  The nearest Metro (underground railway) stop is "Evaggelismos".  Below is a small map (which you can download and/or print) of the area showing the Metro station and the Diving School.

Santorini (also known as Thira) is characterised by many as "the jewel of the Aegean Sea" . Looking at the picture above, you will see why.  The volcanic eruption of Thira Volcano that destroyed the Minoan civilization in antiquity, caused a large part of the island to submerge.  The island is now left with a wild, rare natural beauty.  Its high cliffs and dark colours are unique.

Diving in Santorini is an unforgettable experience.  As you can see in the "diving sites" section, there is a multitude of underwater caves, walls and reefs, and rich marine life.  In and out of the water, Santorini offers the perfect mix.  Be prepared for unique holidays, that you will treasure forever.

Volcano Diving Center is located in "Kamari" next to "Dolphins" hotel (please see the map above).  Once there, walk to the beach and look for the dive flags or the signs to the dive center.  Our red 7m inflatable dive boats when not out diving are in front of the dive center.

-  our work ...

In seeking to broaden our knowledge around the subject of diving and to supplement our instruction with experience from other diving environments, we participate in various research and commercial projects.

Project Britannic 1997:
The 260m long vessel (sister ship of the Titanic, but bigger by about 10%) served as a hospital ship during WWI.  It sunk 2 miles off the coast of Kea (or Tzia) in Greece during its trip from England to the island of Lemnos.  The cause of the sinking is not known with certainty:  She either struck a mine or was torpedoed.  She is lying, nearly intact, on her starboard side at a depth of 120m, regarded to be the best technical diving wreck in the world.  We organised the first modern diving project of the Britannic in Nov 1997 (Jacques Yves Cousteau dived before us in the 70's).  -  gallery
Tsivlos Lake Exploration 1999:
Tsivlos Lake is between Egio and Kalavrita, at 700m altitude.  Due to an earthquake, houses from the village lying next to the lake were drawn into the into it in the early 1900's.  Divers can see oak trees standing on the bottom of the lake and parts from the destroyed houses.  -  gallery (coming soon!)
Project Blue Holes 2002:
The Blue Holes is a system of underwater caves in the Bahamas.  There are also a few inland water filled caves.  Although it is not proven, they are presumed to be interconnected.  Most of them have not been explored yet due to the great depth (usually deeper than 50 meters) and the strong currents generated by the changing tide  -   gallery
Professional Underwater Video and Photography:
Professional broadcast quality underwater video can be produced on demand.  Wireless Telecomunications can be used at any time.  Please take a look at our work.  -   gallery (coming soon!)

Commercial Projects:
These represent a separate branch of our business.  The kind of work we do includes salvage works, pipe and cable laying, underwater construction, inspections, video and photography.  Max. Operating Depth : 120m.  -   gallery
